46 BRITISH COLUMBIA COMPARATIVE POSITIONING OF B.C. WITHIN CANADA Since no other Canadian Province has conducted an in-depth review of its capabilities and infrastructure for pre-clinical studies and clinical trials, it is difficult to determine how B.C. compares. However, an indication of the Province’s ranking in clinical trials can found by comparing Canadian population statistics with the number of studies listed in clintrials.gov (a registry of U.S. federal and privately supported clinical trials conducted around the world) (Table 16) 33 . Using this surrogate method, B.C. compares quite well - it has the third largest population in Canada and manages the third highest number of clinical trials. TABLE 16. CLINICAL TRIALS AND PRECLINICAL INFRASTRUCTURE ASSET MAP 47 OPPORTUNITIES FOR COLLABORATION The aforementioned has highlighted B.C.’s infrastructure in clinical trials and supporting preclinical services. The Province’s physicians and companies provide collaborative opportunities for interested parties, whether they be not-for-profit organizations, governments, or companies. All CTUs, centres, and study sites would welcome additional studies. B.C. has a particular capacity for research intensive (high content) clinical trials, with its expertise in biomarker translation and development and numerous Health Research Centres. The latter include worldclass facilities in informatics, genomics, proteomics, microarrays, pharmacogenomics, epidemiology, and health economics. Comprehensive tissue databases and patient registries are aligned with many Provincial clinical research opportunities and access to these is available to potential collaborators. Finally, the Province’s single-payer government healthcare program and associated uniform treatment policies ensures that there are a significant numbers of potential patients who can be asked to participate in trials.
