CLINICAL TRIALS AND PRECLINICAL INFRASTRUCTURE ASSET MAP 59 Quality control/ assurance procedures are based on extensive BCCA Standard Operating Procedures compliant with ICH, FDA, and Health Canada Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines. All projects are approved by the REB prior to initiation and all research staff are trained appropriately in GCP and these SOPs. The Unit also participates in monitor visits and periodic audits. Children’s Hospital (BCCH) (www.bcchildrens.ca) is the only pediatric health centre and teaching hospital in B.C., and the largest full-service child health centre in Western Canada. As B.C.’s tertiary care facility, it delivers child and youth physical and mental health and rehabilitation services for the most seriously ill or injured children from across the province. It provides care for more than 72,000 children and adolescents every year, including 900 children with cancer, 140 undergoing open-heart surgery, 1,200 needing intensive care, and approximately 2,300 children for the assessment of developmental issues and/or requiring rehabilitation (the latter activities are conducted at BCCH’s Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children. Endocrinology and Diabetes Unit The Endocrinology & Diabetes Unit has an active program for both basic-science and clinical research, particularly in diabetes and healthy lifestyles (www.bcchildrens.ca/Services/SpecializedPediatrics/EndocrinologyDiabetesUnit/default.htm). General Surgery The General Surgery Division provides surgical treatment for head and neck, thoracic, digestive, and oncologic diseases for children of all ages. The division plays an active role in the treatment of birth defects, traumatic injuries, and vascular access, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (www. bcchildrens.ca/Services/SurgeryAndSurgSuites/GeneralSurgery/default.htm). Clinical research includes novel fetal therapies, especially those, such as gene replacement, applicable via “minimally invasive” surgical techniques. The investigators are also interested in outcomes following neonatal surgery. Dr. Skarsgard is creating a surgical, Canada-wide database that will allow illness-severity stratification of specific surgical conditions and enable “best practice” assessments for a number of neonatal conditions requiring surgery after birth (see www.cfri.ca/our_research/researchers/search_researchers/researcher_ detail.aspID=123).
