284 BRITISH COLUMBIA APPENDIX 10. NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS WHICH HAVE B.C. CLINICAL INVESTIGATORS AS PIVOTAL PLAYERS OR MEMBERS This Appendix contains two tables. The first lists national and international networks in which B.C.’s clinical investigators play a pivotal role. The second is a non-exclusive list of Networks to which B.C.’s investigators belong but are not on Executive or other Committees. VCHRI’s Dessa Sadovnick is on the Executive Committee. Under the leadership of CFRI in Vancouver, this network includes researchers in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the 3 northern territories. More than 150 research protocols pertaining to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) are active within the network. Canadian Stroke Consortium (www.strokeconsortium.ca) Academic alliance committed to the pursuit of anti-stroke therapies, Chaired by UBC’s Phil Teal (Director of the B.C. Centre for Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases) and involving over 135 Canadian neurologists and research consultants. Canadian Stroke Network (www.canadianstrokenetwork.ca) Canadian Federal government Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE) based in Ottawa involved in stroke research. Brian MacVicar, UBC, is one of the Theme Leaders (he does not work in clinical trials). NeuroDevNet (www.neurodevnet.ca) This pan-Canadian NCE is focused on FASD, autism, and cerebral palsy. It is led by Dan Goldowitz of CMMT and CFRI (he does not work in clinical trials). It involves clinicians and scientists from across Canada who are dedicated to studying children’s brain development from both basic science and clinical perspectives. PrioNet Canada (www.prionetcanada.ca) Based at UBC in Vancouver, this NCE is dedicated to prion research and directed by UBC’s Neil Cashman (he does not work in clinical trials). Has researchers at nine Canadian universities (from Prince Edward Island to B.C.), two foreign universities, 23 government departments and agencies, and 8 industrial partners. International Pacific Rim Workgroup Against Epilepsy (no URL) CFRI’s Peter Wong is a founding member.
CLINICAL TRIALS AND PRECLINICAL INFRASTRUCTURE ASSET MAP 285 Network Description Cancer/ Hematology National The C17 Council (www.c17.ca) Organization composed of the institutionally appointed heads of the 16 pediatric hematology, oncology, and stem cell transplantation programs in Canada. Acts as an authoritative Canadian voice representing the interests of children and adolescents with cancer and blood disorders. CFRI’s Paul Rogers is one of the Council members and Co-Chair of the Cancer Care for Adolescents and Young Adults Committee. Canadian Blood & Marrow Transplant Group (www.cbmtg.org) National, voluntary, multi-disciplinary organization providing leadership and promoting excellence in patient care, research and education in the field of blood and marrow transplantation (BMT). CFRI’s Kirk Schultz is a prominent member. Canadian Urologic Oncology Group (CUOG) (www.cuog.org) Created, owned and operated by its members, CUOG is a clinical research investigator network. The Consortium is a national alliance of leading academic and community based urologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists. It is headquartered in Vancouver. VGH’s Martin Gleave is past Chair of and a continuing member of the Executive Committee; BCCA’s Tom Pickles and Kim Chi are members of the Executive Committee. Children’s Oncology Group (COG) (www.childrensoncologygroup.org) National Cancer Institute of Canada Clinical Trials Group (NCIC CTG) (www.cancer.ca/research/) International Australian-Canadian Prostate Cancer Research Alliance (www. aus-canprostatealliance.org) National Cancer Institute (U.S.)-Canada Clinical Trials Group (www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/NCI/clinical-trialscooperative-group) Pediatric Bone and Marrow Transplant Consortium (PBMTC) (www.pbmtc.org) International group sponsored by the US National Cancer Institute that conducts epidemiologic, clinical and translational research in pediatric cancer. CFRI’s Paul Rogers is a prominent member. The NCIC CTG is funded by the NCIC (now Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute) through its world-renowned peer review process. A number of B.C. investigators are on various NCIC CTG Executive Committees. BCCA’s Kim Chi is on the Genitourinary (GU) Disease Site Executive Committee; Chair of the sub-site Advanced Prostate group; and Executive Committee Member and Chair-elect of the Investigational New Drug Site; Stephen Chia is on the Clinical Trials Committee and Breast Site Executive Committee; Hagan Kennecke is on the GI Executive Committee; Christopher Lee is on the Lung Site Executive Committee; Martin Gleave is past Chair of and continues to be a member of the GU Clinical Trials Group Executive Committee. International network of Australian and Canadians who can coordinate their skills and solve the complex problems facing prostate cancer. The Vancouver Prostate Centre is the Canadian Hub of this alliance and a founding member. The Clinical Trials Cooperative Group Program, sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), promotes and supports clinical trials of new cancer treatments, explores methods of cancer prevention and early detection, and studies qualityof-life issues and rehabilitation during and after treatment. Cooperative groups include researchers, cancer centres, and community physicians throughout the U.S, Canada, and Europe. A number of B.C. investigators are on NCI Executive Committees. BCCA’s Kim Chi is on the Prostate Cancer Task Force Committee; Hagan Kennecke is on the Neuroendocrine Task Force Committee. CFRI’s Kirk Schultz is past Chair.. A voluntary group of clinicians and scientists that includes over 100 pediatric PBMTC centres in North America, Australia and New Zealand. Purpose is to engage in scientific and educational activities related to the use of hematopoietic stem cells in the treatment of diseases of children and adolescents.
