BRITISH COLUMBIA<br />

Quality control procedures are based on St<strong>and</strong>ard Operating Procedures <strong>and</strong> Good <strong>Clinical</strong> Practice<br />

guidelines of Health Canada <strong>and</strong> the FDA. The unit also provides regular training sessions for researchers<br />

<strong>and</strong> staff members in the conduct of clinical studies. All projects are approved by the REB prior to<br />

initiation.<br />

Neurosurgery Division, VGH<br />

The VGH Division of Neurosurgery (www.surgery.ubc.ca/neurosurgery) has three Principal Investigator<br />

physicians, one nurse, <strong>and</strong> one research nurse/coordinator who work with patients with cerebrovascular<br />

disease/ stroke. Details about the physicians can be found in Appendix 6.<br />

The division sees about 5,000 new patients per year of which approximately 200 may be eligible for<br />

clinical trials. It conducts Phases II <strong>and</strong> III clinical trials <strong>and</strong> has one clinical trials research nurse. It uses<br />

the Vancouver General Hospital pharmacy <strong>and</strong> laboratory in its conduct of clinical trials, as well as an<br />

external laboratory.<br />

Quality control <strong>and</strong> assurance are procedures are based on SOPs <strong>and</strong> the Good <strong>Clinical</strong> Practice guidelines<br />

of the FDA/Health Canada. The division provides regular training sessions for researchers <strong>and</strong> staff<br />

members in the conduct of clinical studies.<br />

Psychiatry Administration - VGH<br />

The VGH Psychiatry Administration division has four Principal Investigators who work with patients with<br />

mental illness, particularly depression, schizophrenia, <strong>and</strong> addiction. It also has two research nurses/coordinators.<br />

Details about the PIs can be found in Appendix 6.<br />

The Unit works on Phases III <strong>and</strong> IV clinical trials, as well as investigator-initiated <strong>and</strong> grant funded studies.<br />

It sees approximately 500 new patients per year. It has no independent URL.<br />

Quality control <strong>and</strong> assurance are procedures are based on sponsor SOPs. Researchers <strong>and</strong> staff are<br />

trained in the conduct of clinical studies within VCH.<br />
