Mood Disorders Centre of Excellence UBC: Clinical Trials Section
Based at UBC Hospital, the UBC Mood Disorders Centre of Excellence (CoE) (www.ubcmood.ca) develops,
evaluates and provides innovative programs of care, educating health professionals and the public,
and conducting clinical studies on the causes of, and treatments for, mood disorders (particularly depression
and bipolar disorders). It is affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry, UBC; Vancouver Coastal
Health Research Institute; and the UBC Institute of Mental Health. It sees approximately 470 new patients
per year, of which 20% may be enrolled into studies. It serves both in-patients and out-patients.
The CoE has 16 investigators, as listed below and detailed in Appendix 6. It conducts Phases I – IV clinical
trials, as well as investigator-initiated and grant-funded studies.

It uses both UBC Hospital and external pharmacy and laboratory facilities in the conduct of its clinical
trials.
Quality control and assurance are procedures are based on SOPs and the Good Clinical Practice guidelines
of the FDA/Health Canada. The division provides regular training sessions for researchers and
staff members in the conduct of clinical studies and GCP regulations and guidelines. New staff are also
trained in REB procedures, hospital research guidelines, Health Canada Tri-Council Policy Statement,
psychological assessment scales, ECG, and dangerous goods.
