Industrial Funders<br />

Approximately 260 companies funded clinical trials in B.C. over the past five years. Industrial sponsors<br />

included small start-ups <strong>and</strong> major companies, with investments ranging from less than $1,000 to over<br />

$1M. Median sponsorship was $18,700, with 25% of projects receiving more than $53,000. Sponsors<br />

included all of the world’s top pharmaceutical <strong>and</strong> biotech companies.<br />

Therapeutic Focus of <strong>Clinical</strong> <strong>Trials</strong><br />

<strong>Clinical</strong> trials in B.C. cover all major disease areas. The most important, based on number of studies over<br />

the past five years, are those conducted in cancer, followed by cardiovascular diseases/ cardiology <strong>and</strong><br />

CNS disorders (Figure 5). In terms of dollars, clinical trials in infectious diseases/ infection received the<br />

most funds, in part because of national bulk funding for the CIHR Canadian HIV <strong>Trials</strong> Network. Cancer,<br />

CNS disorders <strong>and</strong> cardiovascular diseases/ cardiology received the next highest levels of funds (Figure<br />

6).
