Networks In Which B.C.’s Clinical Investigators Play a Pivotal Role (cont’d)
Network Description
Infectious Diseases
National
CAIRE - Canadian Association for Immunization Research
(www.caire.ca)
Canadian Immunization Monitoring Program, Active (IMPACT)
Chair: Scheifele, David. Based at CFRI, Vancouver. CAIRE is a professional organization of Canadian vaccine researchers.
Many of the members are involved in applied vaccinology, i.e., evaluating new vaccines, building the rationale for new
public programs and optimizing public immunization programs.
Pediatric hospital-based national active surveillance network for adverse events following immunization, vaccine failures
and selected infectious diseases in children that are, or are soon to be, vaccine preventable. Consists of 12 Canadian
centres. The IMPACT data centre is located in Vancouver, B.C.
CIHR Canadian HIV Trials Network (www.hivnet.ubc.ca) Based at St Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver B.C. National Director: Martin Schechter, PHCRI. Partnership of clinical investigators,
physicians, nurses, people living with HIV/AIDS, pharmaceutical manufacturers and others that facilitates HIV/AIDS
clinical trials; have centres in 30 clinics and hospitals stretching across the country from Nova Scotia to B.C. (see also
Appendices 1 and 10 [section 4]).
Pan-Provincial Vaccine Enterprise (PREVENT) http://www.
Pediatric Investigators Collaborative Network on Infections
in Canada (see www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/
PMC2827737/)
PrioNet Canada (www.prionetcanada.ca) Based at UBC, Vancouver B.C. See above for details.
Public Health Agency of Canada - Canadian Institutes of
Health Research Influenza Research Network (PCIRN) (www.
pcirn.ca)
International
Based in Saskatoon, this incorporated Canadian non-profit organization identifies promising vaccine candidates
targeting Canada's public health priorities and works with industry partners to develop these vaccine candidates for the
marketplace. PREVENT conducts time and labour intensive preclinical and early-stage clinical trials for promising vaccine
candidates, reducing the risk by facilitating critical mid-stage vaccine development. A Canadian western regional
office is located at BCCDC, Vancouver.
Network established to answer significant questions in a timely manner. Canada’s small population relative to its large
geographic area makes it nearly impossible for a single centre to have the sample numbers necessary to answer such
questions. Consists of many pediatric centres across Canada. BCCH’s David Scheifele is a leading member.
A pan-Canadian vaccine research network that conducts applied public health research in preparation for and during an
influenza pandemic. The Rapid Vaccine Trials are led by David Scheifele of CFRI and BCCDC.
SARS Accelerated Vaccine Initiative (SAVI) (www.savi-info.ca) Based at BCCDC and UBC, this B.C.-led international consortium of organizations and individuals is working to fast track
the development of a SARS vaccine.
Maternal and Child Health (Not Disease Specific)
National
Canadian Mother Infant Child Youth Research Network (MI-
CYRN) (www.micyrn.ca)
Directed by Anne Junker, CFRI, Vancouver B.C. Multi-disciplinary initiative to support world-class clinical research
nationwide, connecting. 17 academic child/child-maternal health centres across Canada. Primary objectives are to build
innovative platforms to address gaps in the clinical research environment through the establishment of core programs
in research partnerships, training, knowledge translation, research methods, research ethics and regulatory affairs, and
funding partnerships. Also sets out to establish integrated access to innovative tools in data management, genomics,
and biobanking.
