MCS is a small non-profit organization concerned with the health of young people in B.C.. MCS has conducted community-based research
and projects addressing current youth health issues. The society takes its name from the late Dr. J.F. McCreary, a paediatrician and medical
administrator, whose leadership in promoting inter-professional teaching and multi-disciplinary approaches in health care set a standard
that the society seeks to emulate.
MCS has a number of partnerships to develop research and networking opportunities, including:
• Student Research Group
• Sexual Orientation, Risk and Resilience Study
• Experiences of Stigma and Risk Behaviours Study
MCS research is in early adolescence, youth homelessness and youth vulnerability:
• Promoting Resiliency in Early Adolescence
• Healthy Youth Development: The Opportunity of Early Adolescence
• National Training Initiative in Adolescent Health (NTIAH)
• Violence in Adolescence: injury, suicide, and criminal violence in the lives of B.C. youth
• Accenting the Positive: a developmental framework for reducing risk and promoting positive outcomes among B.C. youth.
BCCEWH research has been framed by three themes: Healthy Women and Healthy Communities, Health Status and Health Determinants,
Women Centred Care.
BCCEWH current activities focus on women and addictions; mental health; health services; mothering and maternity; and physical activity.
BCCEWH collaborates with women’s health researchers across B.C., across Canada and around the world. The BCCEWH is known internationally
for its work on women tobacco issues, as well as change-oriented research and knowledge exchange activities.
CeMCOR is an accessible research centre with a mandate to distribute information directly to women about changes through the life cycle,
from adolescence to menopause. CeMCOR’S goal is to do good science that honours the voices and experiences of women. It is the only
centre in North America that focuses on ovulation and the causes for and consequences of ovulation disturbances.
CeMCOR studies the physical and psychological causes and effects of ovulation disturbances on women’s overall health. CeMCOR publishes
scientific results and disseminates information directly to women. CeMCOR document variations in the menstrual cycle and ovulation in
the context of the lives of women of all ages. CeMCOR is analyzing the relationships of the menstrual cycle and ovulation changes with
weight changes, metabolism changes, eating attitudes, breast maturation, bone physiology, pre-menstrual experiences and changes in
the physiology of exercise, respiration, cardiovascular function and breast density and nodularity.
