multi-institutional clinical trials.<br />

It uses the VGH pharmacy in the conduct of its clinical trials.<br />

Quality control <strong>and</strong> assurance are procedures are based on Good <strong>Clinical</strong> Practice regulations <strong>and</strong><br />

guidelines of the FDA/Health Canada. The division has extensive SOPs <strong>and</strong> provides regular training sessions<br />

for researchers <strong>and</strong> staff members in the conduct of clinical studies.<br />

The Lung Centre<br />

The Lung Centre (http://lungcentre.vch.ca/) specializes in the treatment of pulmonary conditions such<br />

as asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, lung cancer, occupational <strong>and</strong> environmental<br />

lung diseases, sarcoidosis, pnuemonia, tuberculosis, pulmonary hypertension <strong>and</strong> interstitial lung<br />

disease. As well as its clinical activities, the Lung Centre also has dedicated research space in which it<br />

conducts multiple research projects.<br />

The clinical trials unit primarily conducts Phases II, III, <strong>and</strong> IV clinical trials, as well as investigator-initiated<br />

studies. Studies accrue approximately 140 patients per year (10% of the estimated 1,440 new patients<br />

seen at the clinic per year).<br />

The facility has 16 investigators as listed below. Their details can be found in Appendix 6. Its structure is<br />

shown in Figure A7.
