Its mandate is to advance knowledge about cancer and other diseases, to improve human health through disease prevention, diagnosis and therapeutic approaches, and to realize the social and economic benefits of genomics research. Technology platforms include: • Bioinformatics • Sequencing • Physical mapping • Affymetrix microarray • Illumina sequencing • Proteomics • Expression cloning • Drug discovery. A research facility in the Simon Fraser University’s Gerontology Research Centre and the British Columbia Institute of Technology’s Technology Centre. It evaluates and assists in the design and operational risk for medical and biomechanical devices. It evaluates orthotics, biomechanical risk, mobility-impairment. The Lab conducts research and training activities that aim to improve the relationship between people and their living and working environments. The scope of research extends from gerontology to engineering, and from field studies to laboratory simulation to medical and assistive device development. UVic - Genome B.C. Proteomics Centre is a state-of-the-art proteomics research facility. It is the longest operating proteomics core facility in Canada, having been in operation since 1982, and serves clients in academia, industry and government on a fee-for-service and collaborative basis. The School’s view of health information encompasses clinical, sociological, epidemiological, administrative, legal, and economic perspectives. Health is seen from a community perspective and encompasses the full range of services including health promotion and disease prevention, home care, community health and occupational health, physicians services, institutional acute care, rehabilitation and extended care. The Vancouver Prostate Centre’s Microarray Facility is a multi-platform facility that provides research projects with services ensuring the successful design, execution and interpretation of microarray experiments. The facility offers commercial (Agilent, Illumina and NimbleGen) whole-genome and custom high-density microarrays for gene expression, miRNA, copy number variation and epigenetic studies. Exon capture arrays were recently added which when integrated with next generation sequencing technologies, will make whole genome and targeted re-sequencing studies possible. The Facility is recognized as an expert in the design and use of custom spotted cDNA, oligonucleotide and protein microarrays, and in the analysis of the resulting data. Moreover, the facility has added software that allows seamless cross-platform integration and analysis of expression, genomic and next generation sequence data making extremely powerful and comprehensive studies possible. 14.
