64 BRITISH COLUMBIA The clinical trials unit primarily conducts Phases II, III, and IV clinical trials. Studies include populations from newborn to the elderly. Enrollments range in size from 25 to 300 subjects per study. The facility has five Principal Investigators as listed below, and eight Associate Investigators. Other Women & Family HIV Centre The Women and Family HIV Centre is a Provincial resource that provides medical care to women, children and youth living with HIV disease in B.C. (no URL). It is jointly sponsored by the Women’s Health Centre and BCCH. The centre has an important priority of preventing the transmission of HIV from pregnant women to their infants by coordinating a Provincial program of treating the mothers and their infants with antiretroviral medications. These infants and all HIV infected children and youth less than 18 years of age receive medical care at the centre (see www.cfri.ca/our_research/researchers/search_researchers/researcher_detail.aspID=41; http://gateway.nlm.nih.gov/MeetingAbstracts/ maf=102209450.html). The centre is active in clinical research, including novel treatments, vaccines, and diagnostic/ prognostic biomarkers. It is also part of the national surveillance program of the Canadian Perinatal HIV database, which is reported annually by Public Health Agency of Canada. Women’s Hospital Obstetric Medicine Program This program provides inpatient and outpatient consultative services to both high and low risk obstetrics (http://www.bcwomens.ca/ForProfessionals/ClinicalPractice/SpecializedWomensHealth/ Obstetric+Medicine.htm). The active research program focuses on the hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and diabetes. Maternal Fetal Medicine Research Unit The Maternal Fetal Medicine Research Unit (no URL) conducts trials on drug therapy, biomarkers, management of labour and delivery, as well as conducting technology assessments. It is a member of the North American Fetal Therapy Network (www.naftnet.org).
