The Vancouver Prostate Centre<br />

The Vancouver Prostate Centre (www.prostatecentre.com) (www.pctriadd.com) is a world-class research,<br />

translational, <strong>and</strong> clinical facility that works on all aspects of prostate disease including cancer,<br />

bladder problems, <strong>and</strong> kidney disease. The <strong>Clinical</strong> <strong>Trials</strong> Unit resides within this Centre.<br />

The Clinic conducts Phases I, II, III, <strong>and</strong> IV clinical trials, as well as investigator-initiated, National Cancer<br />

Institute of Canada (NCIC), Canadian Urologic Oncology Group (CUOG), <strong>and</strong> Canadian Urology Research<br />

Consortium (CURC) studies. The Clinic sees approximately 1,000 new patients/year. It is able to<br />

enroll 800 – 1,200 patients in clinical trials, depending on eligibility (10-15% of the approximately 8,000<br />

patients registered with the Clinic).<br />

* There are 2 coordinators <strong>and</strong> 2 nurses. Also involved in data collection <strong>and</strong> data entry, i.e., perform Data Manager/Coordinator role.<br />

** Part-time unit manager who is also one of the study nurses.<br />

The unit uses laboratory <strong>and</strong> pharmacy staff outside Vancouver General Hospital in its conduct of clinical<br />

trials.<br />

Quality control/assurance procedures are based on extensive St<strong>and</strong>ard Operating Procedures which<br />

are read <strong>and</strong> signed by all staff <strong>and</strong> updated as required (minimum annually). Furthermore, all investigators/staff<br />

have completed the “NCI Human Participant Protections Education for Research Teams online<br />

course”, have read the “GCP Guidelines”, <strong>and</strong> have a Certificate of Completion of the “NCIC CTG Certificate<br />

on GCP Guidelines”. All projects are approved by the REB prior to initiation.<br />

IT<br />

Vancouver Retinal Research Group<br />

Based at the VGH/ UBC Eye Care Centre, the Vancouver Retinal Research Group conducts Phases II <strong>and</strong><br />

III clinical trials, as well as investigator initiated <strong>and</strong> grant funded studies into macular degeneration,<br />

diabetic retinopathy, <strong>and</strong> central retina vein occlusion. It offers study design, protocol preparation,<br />

budget preparation, ethics applications, source documents, <strong>and</strong> study facilitation (i.e., coordinates study<br />

procedure with various departments <strong>and</strong> investigators, study staff training, <strong>and</strong> oversight). It has no<br />

independent URL.
