Pediatric Rheumatology Program<br />

The Pediatric Rheumatology Program includes both clinical <strong>and</strong> basic research into inflammatory rheumatic<br />

diseases of childhood, with pediatric clinics <strong>and</strong> a transition program for older adolescents <strong>and</strong><br />

young adults with rheumatic diseases. The latter is called the Young Adult Rheumatic Disease (YARD)<br />

Clinic (www.bcchildrens.ca/Services/SpecializedPediatrics/Rheumatology/default.htm).<br />

The Program is involved in clinical <strong>and</strong> translation research focused on pediatric rheumatic diseases<br />

including chronic arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus <strong>and</strong> vasculitis. It also participates in, <strong>and</strong> is involved<br />

in the development of, national <strong>and</strong> international networks <strong>and</strong> patient registries to facilitate this<br />

Provincial Medical Genetics Program<br />

The Provincial Medical Genetics Program is committed to providing high quality genetic health care to<br />

residents of B.C., while participating in <strong>and</strong> contributing actively to research <strong>and</strong> education in the field<br />

of Medical Genetics. The clinic at BCCH is a provincial referral centre <strong>and</strong> is available to families from all<br />

over B.C. <strong>and</strong> the Yukon (www.bcchildrens.ca/Services/MedicalGenetics/default.htm). Current clinical<br />

trials deal with the identification <strong>and</strong> experimental treatment of lysosomal storage diseases. The program<br />

is also an important part of the Canadian Congenital Anomalies Surveillance Network.<br />

Vaccine Evaluation Centre<br />

The Vaccine Evaluation Centre (www.bcchildrens.ca/Research/VaccineEvaluationCentre/) is a leading<br />

centre for applied vaccine research in Canada. The main research themes involve disease burden studies,<br />

vaccine clinical trials, <strong>and</strong> studies to fine tune public immunization programs, including ongoing<br />

assessment of vaccine safety.
