86 BRITISH COLUMBIA Multiple Sclerosis Clinic The Multiple Sclerosis Clinic (www.ubcneurology.com/Research_MS.html) operates at UBC Hospital. It had 3,698 patient visits and 635 new patients in 2007. The clinic coordinates new escalating therapy options for aggressive MS and also provides specialized care for neuromyelitis optica (NMO). It provides outreach support to clinics in Victoria (1,000 patients registered), Kelowna (700 patients), and Prince George (300 patients), as well as providing outreach care directly to patients in Comox (Vancouver Island). Therapeutic trials in MS have encompassed both disease modifying and symptomatic therapies. All stages and types of MS have been represented in at least Phases II and III trials. Investigators have a strong profile in clinical trial development, safety monitoring and MRI/immunology sub-studies. The MS/MRI Research Group has provided central analysis for numerous international multicentre randomized clinical trials and are recognized internationally for their work in this area. Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre Located at UBC Hospital, the Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre is a multidisciplinary program dedicated to the diagnosis and management of Parkinson’s and other related disorders, such as tremor and dystonia (www.parkinsons.ubc.ca/index.html). It has been designated as a Centre of Excellence by the National Parkinson Foundation in the US. In addition to treating patients, it has a strong research program that spans preclinical, clinical and population studies. Under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Stoessl, an internationally recognized expert on Parkinson’s disease, the centre has the largest peer-reviewed research program in Canada on Parkinson’s disease. Patients registered with the UBC Movement Disorders Clinic in 2007 included 1,100 with typical Parkinson’s disease, 400 patients with Parkinson-like disorders, and 500 – 1,000 with dystonia 5 . Hospitals Anesthesia Department The Anesthesia Department supports anesthesiologists at VGH, St. Paul’s, B.C. Women’s, B.C.
