PHCRI conducts research in the areas of heart, lung <strong>and</strong> kidney care, HIV/AIDS, critical care, mental health <strong>and</strong> addiction <strong>and</strong> other urban<br />
health issues, <strong>and</strong> elder care research.<br />
PHCRI focus is on research that pursues real life health solutions for the patients <strong>and</strong> residents cared for at Providence Health Care <strong>and</strong><br />
across B.C.. PHCRI has over 100 principle investigators <strong>and</strong> several Research Centres whose areas of research are directly aligned with the<br />
priority care programs of Providence Health Care:<br />
• James Hogg iCAPTURE Centre for Cardiovascular <strong>and</strong> Pulmonary Research<br />
• Centre for Health Evaluation <strong>and</strong> Outcome <strong>Sciences</strong><br />
• B.C. Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS<br />
• Centre for Healthy Ageing at Providence.<br />
PHCRI also houses two National research programs:<br />
• CIHR Canadian HIV <strong>Trials</strong> Network<br />
• Centre of Excellence for Commercialization <strong>and</strong> Research: The Prevention of Organ Failure Centre of Excellence (PROOF Centre).<br />
<strong>Clinical</strong> research at Vancouver General Hospital (<strong>and</strong> UBC Hospital) is conducted by the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute<br />
(VCHRI), a partnership between Vancouver Coastal Health Authority (VCH) <strong>and</strong> UBC. It fosters <strong>and</strong> promotes research <strong>and</strong> innovation across<br />
the entire VCH.<br />
VCHRI is one of Canada’s top funded health sciences research institutes. With a focus on translational research <strong>and</strong> innovation, the Institute<br />
supports <strong>and</strong> develops programs <strong>and</strong> initiatives across the health spectrum <strong>and</strong> at several sites <strong>and</strong> research centres in B.C.:<br />
• Brain Research Centre: focuses on mechanisms of brain function <strong>and</strong> neurological disorders of the brain including multiple sclerosis,<br />
Parkinson’s disease, mood disorders, <strong>and</strong> schizophrenia.<br />
• Centre for <strong>Clinical</strong> Epidemiology & Evaluation: supports clinical research <strong>and</strong> evaluation of clinical programs <strong>and</strong> provides expertise in<br />
clinical research methodology <strong>and</strong> statistics to other VCHRI investigators <strong>and</strong> health care policy makers<br />
• Centre for Hip Health & Mobility: brings together researchers from a wide range of disciplines to investigate <strong>and</strong> treat hip fractures <strong>and</strong><br />
osteoarthritis, <strong>and</strong> create new surgical solutions.<br />
• Centre for Respiratory & Critical Care Medicine: research to improve prevention, diagnosis, <strong>and</strong> treatment of respiratory <strong>and</strong> critical care<br />
illnesses including lung cancer, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, sleep apnea, <strong>and</strong> tuberculosis.<br />
• ICORD: International Collaboration on (spinal cord) Repair Discoveries: research into surgical advances, <strong>and</strong> new approaches in rehabilitation<br />
leading to better health outcomes for people with spinal cord injury.<br />
• mmunity & Infection Research Centre: works to underst<strong>and</strong> the immune mechanisms that both fight infectious diseases <strong>and</strong> cause immune<br />
disorders<br />
• The Vancouver Prostate Centre: focuses its efforts on fighting prostate cancer through improved underst<strong>and</strong>ing of prevention, diagnosis,<br />
<strong>and</strong> treatment, as well as patient education.
