FIP BCCA operates the only clinical PET/CT scanner in B.C., located at the Vancouver Centre. FIP BCCA also has a state-of-the art small animal PET/CT scanner housed at the B.C. Cancer Research Centre which is used for pre-clinical studies. Construction of a new 6000 sq ft cyclotron and radiopharmaceutical production and research facility is underway and this will provide space for a 2nd PET/CT scanner. It will enable sustainable FDG production as a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical, providing opportunities for new radiotracer development and clinical trials. FIP BCCA Centre of Excellence for Functional Cancer Imaging is being developed to: • Improve cancer diagnosis and treatment planning for patients and health care professionals • Build research programs for the discovery, development and application of new radiotracers • Apply new advances in imaging to improve prevention, early diagnosis and management of cancers • Collaborate in a growing national and international network of functional imaging programs. The VPC research and clinical team focuses its efforts on fighting prostate cancer through improved understanding of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as patient education. PC–TRIADD is a translational research centre and designated Centre of Excellence for Commercialization and Research focused on improving outcomes in prostate cancer. The VPC houses a large biorepository of untreated and post-treated prostate, bladder, and kidney cancers for target and biomarker characterization studies. It prides itself on its ability to move laboratory discoveries through the checks and balances of clinical trials and eventually to develop these research findings into new and more effective treatments. VPC/PC-TRIADD research interests include: • Pre-clinical and clinical evaluation of novel anti-cancer inhibitors • Elucidation of mechanisms of androgen-independent progression • Gene targeting device • Role of androgens in promoting prostate tumor • Psycho-social aspects of prostate disease. Finlandia has recently partnered with InspireHealth, Canada’s only government funded, research-based integrated cancer care centre. Its program strongly promotes personal engagement in health through nutrition, exercise, and emotional and spiritual support— vital components for optimal cancer care, health and healing. InspireHealth is located in Vancouver, and is Canada’s foremost integrated cancer care centre, leading the way through research and innovative cancer care programs integrated with conventional cancer treatment. InspireHealth medical doctors have helped guide more than 5,500 patients to integrate research-informed natural approaches to health into their cancer treatment and recovery. There is growing evidence that these natural approaches to supporting health and immune system function can significantly decrease the risk of cancer recurrence and increase survival.

BCCDC provides both direct diagnostic and treatment services for people with diseases of public health importance and analytical and policy support to all levels of government and health authorities. BCCDC investigates and evaluates the occurrence of communicable diseases in B.C. and is the provincial reporting centre for reportable cases and categories of communicable diseases. In addition, the Centre creates opportunities for scientists, health professionals, university and other partners to contribute their knowledge and experience in resolving the outstanding health challenges facing British Columbians. BCCDC is an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority. Scientific and technical support is provided by the following specialized divisions. These divisions supply statistics and reports in disease surveillance, and research publications in disease outcomes and treatment: • Epidemiology Services • Vaccine and Pharmacy Services • Hepatitis Division • STI/HIV Prevention and Control • Tuberculosis Control • Mathematical Modelling Unit • Public Health Emergency Management • Environmental Health Services • UBC Centre for Disease Control. Centre for Excellence HIV clinical research program focuses on further defining the role of antiretroviral therapy for the treatment of HIV infection. CFE HIV Current priorities include: • The evaluation of antiretroviral safety and efficacy of specific treatment regimens, simplified regimens, adjunctive therapies and new formulations of existing drugs. • Investigations into treatments for HIV patients co-infected with other viruses, such as hepatitis B and C. • New approaches to the treatment of HIV-related opportunistic infections; and investigations related to drug toxicities and metabolic risk factors associated with HIV. The clinical team includes individuals with expertise in all areas of HIV care with special emphasis on primary care, infectious diseases, respiratory medicine, lipid disorders, counselling and psychology, and clinical trial operations. CTN is an innovative partnership of clinical investigators, physicians, nurses, people living with HIV/AIDS, pharmaceutical manufacturers and others that facilitates HIV/AIDS clinical trials of the highest scientific and ethical standards. CTN provides a national and regional infrastructure to facilitate clinical trials in HIV/AIDS. CTN Core Research teams develop a clinical trial, from first concept to final protocol. CTN managers, statisticians, data methodologists, communications officers and others also assist in managing all aspects of an HIV trial. CTN Core research Teams focus on four areas of HIV research: • Antiretroviral Therapies • Clinical Management Science • Concurrent Diseases and Vulnerable Populations • Vaccines and Immunotherapies.
