APPENDIX 1.
DESCRIPTION OF B.C.’S CLINICAL TRIALS UNITS, CENTRES,
AND STUDY SITES
PROVINCIAL HEALTH SERVICES AUTHORITY
B.C. Cancer Agency
The British Columbia Cancer Agency (BCCA) (www.bccancer.bc.ca) is responsible for both patient care
and research within a single operational structure. It provides a population-based cancer care program,
including prevention, screening and early detection, diagnosis and treatment services, rehabilitation
support and community programs, research, and education. Thus, unlike most other jurisdictions which
move patients from primary and secondary to tertiary care facilities as their disease progresses, B.C.’s
cancer patients are generally managed by the same tumour specific team from first therapy to final outcome.
A complete record of a patient’s management (e.g., therapy, outcomes, etc.) is housed within a
centralized registry managed by the BCCA. Biological samples from each patient are stored in biorepositiories.
Tumour teams are responsible for therapeutic protocols and policy decisions, rapidly translating
experimental medicines and novel processes into routine care if the outcomes data support this.
The Agency has five clinical locations: Vancouver Centre, Abbotsford, Fraser Valley (in Surrey), Vancouver
Island (in Victoria), and Southern Interior (in Kelowna). It contains a number of units important to the
clinical and preclinical infrastructure in B.C., as shown in Figure A1. Details of the six clinical trials units
(CTUs) are given below. Brief information on the Advanced Therapeutics Investigational Drug Program
and Tumour Tissue Repository can be found in Appendix 12 and Table 7 of the main text.
