WHAT IS A WAN
A wide area network (WAN) is a computer network covering a wide geographical
area, including more than one remote location. The geographically dispersed
locations are interconnected, thus forming a WAN.
Fast Facts
WANs may be created in different configurations, with the most common being
some combination of public networks and private networks.
Public networks are publicly accessed and connected to the Internet. They
may use Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) or a virtual private network
(VPN) to build a WAN over the Internet.
Private networks are point-to-point network links, which are separated
from the public Internet either physically or virtually. They may use
Frame Relay or Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) or a similar
technology.
A WAN covers a relatively broad geographic area and often uses transmission
facilities provided by common carriers, such as telephone
companies.
