NETWORK DEVICES<br />

Network devices are the components of a set of interconnected computer systems<br />

that understand the network layout and can efficiently route traffic to its intended<br />

destination. They generally connect to each of the computer systems in the network<br />

via the types of physical media covered in Chapter 2 and provide security<br />

features in addition to the features centered on establishing and maintaining<br />

efficient connectivity.<br />

Fast Facts<br />

There exist a number of different network devices, including routers, switches,<br />

and hubs, each of which maps to a particular layer of the Open Systems Interconnection<br />

(OSI) model. Table 3.1 displays some of these devices and their<br />

mappings.<br />

Repeaters<br />

The repeater will take a signal that may be weakening and regenerate it to its<br />

original strength so that the data doesn’t corrupt as it travels over long distances.<br />

Hubs<br />

Hubs, or concentrators, are central devices where network cabling is connected.<br />

Multiple cables connect into the hub, providing a method for data to be passed<br />

from one cable to another. Characteristics of a hub are as follows:
