Promotion of research and developm<strong>en</strong>t in the field<br />

of r<strong>en</strong>ewable <strong>en</strong>ergies<br />

Research and developm<strong>en</strong>t projects on the technologies of r<strong>en</strong>ewable <strong>en</strong>ergy are promoted<br />

under the German governm<strong>en</strong>t’s <strong>en</strong>ergy research programme. The Federal Environm<strong>en</strong>t<br />

Ministry (BMU) is responsible for promoting application-ori<strong>en</strong>ted projects in the field of<br />

r<strong>en</strong>ewable <strong>en</strong>ergy.<br />

Investm<strong>en</strong>t in r<strong>en</strong>ewable <strong>en</strong>ergy sources helps to conserve scarce resources, reduce dep<strong>en</strong>d<strong>en</strong>ce<br />

on <strong>en</strong>ergy imports, and protect the <strong>en</strong>vironm<strong>en</strong>t and climate. Technical innovations reduce<br />

the cost of <strong>en</strong>ergy g<strong>en</strong>erated from r<strong>en</strong>ewable sources.<br />

The Ministry also provides assistance for research and developm<strong>en</strong>t in the r<strong>en</strong>ewables sector<br />

in relation to site-related and labour market aspects. Assistance for research str<strong>en</strong>gth<strong>en</strong>s the<br />

leading international position and competitiv<strong>en</strong>ess of German companies and research establishm<strong>en</strong>ts.<br />

This gives rise to new jobs in a market that is growing worldwide.<br />

The over-arching aims of research assistance are:<br />

ó Expanding r<strong>en</strong>ewable <strong>en</strong>ergy as part of the German governm<strong>en</strong>t’s sustainability, <strong>en</strong>ergy<br />
