An independent study supervised by three faculty members that provides the student<br />

who qualifies under the honors guidelines the opportunity to pursue a special topic of his/her<br />

choice.<br />

HIS 410. THE EMERGENCE OF MODERN AMERICA<br />

Three hours credit<br />

An in-depth study of the United States from 1850 to 1900. Special emphasis will be<br />

placed on the American Civil War, Rise of Labor, Farmers and Native American Indians.<br />

Offered Fall Semester.<br />

HIS 411. 20th AMERICAN CENTURY HISTORY<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A study of the economic, social, political, and cultural history of the United States since<br />

1900. Special attention will be given to current problems in the Near and Far East. Offered<br />

Spring Semester.<br />

HIS 421. HISTORY OF THE SOUTH<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A study of the economic, social, political, and cultural development of the South. Offered<br />

Fall Semester, even years.<br />

HIS 430. ANCIENT HISTORY<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A study of the ancient Near Eastern, Greek, and early Roman civilizations. Special<br />

emphasis will be given to archaeological information illustrating the interrelationships<br />

between the Old Testament and the history and culture of these civilizations. Offered Fall<br />

Semester.<br />

HIS 440. ROME AND THE EARLY CHURCH<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A study of early church history and thought in the context of the classical culture of<br />

Rome from the late Republic until 476 A.D. Special emphasis will be given to church/state<br />

relations after the New Testament era. Offered Spring Semester.<br />

HIS 445. MEDIEVAL HISTORY<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A study of the political, social, and religious history of the Middle Ages (c. 300–1400) in<br />

Europe with a special emphasis on England and Ireland, Jewish history, women’s roles in<br />

society, and popular religion and heresy.<br />

HIS 450. HISTORY OF POLITICAL THOUGHT<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A survey of the major works in political theory from ancient times to the more modern<br />

theories which impact the world.<br />

HIS 451. CULTURAL AND INTELLECTUAL HISTORY OF<br />

THE UNITED STATES<br />

A consideration of prominent intellectual systems in American history from Puritanism<br />

to progressivism, and their contributions to the molding of national character. Offered Spring<br />

Semester, odd years.<br />

HIS 460. TUDOR AND STUART ENGLAND<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A history of England from the twilight of Medievalism at the end of the fourteenth century<br />

to the overthrow of James II in 1688. Special attention will be given to cultural, economic,<br />

religious, and political developments during the Tudor and Stuart periods. Offered Spring<br />

An intensive study of selected topics, including research in the materials of history and<br />

the writing of analytical reports.<br />

A course that examines the moral and political responsibilities of government and Christian<br />

citizens with regard to a variety of social, economic, and cultural public policy problems.
