HSC 330. FITNESS, WELLNESS, & LIFESTYLE MANAGEMENT Three hours credit<br />

A course designed to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the assessment<br />

and development of physical fitness, with emphases on both personal application and<br />

group leadership.<br />

HSC 331. CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH<br />

Three hours credit<br />

An in-depth study of heart disease, circulation, heart structure and function, and training<br />

responses. Emphases will be on health-related concepts including obesity, nutrition, and<br />

stress. Prerequisite: BIO 103 or 112.<br />

HSC 345. THERAPEUTIC EXERCISE AND MODALITIES Three hours credit<br />

A class addressing the plans, procedures, and implementation of a comprehensive<br />

rehabilitation and reconditioning program for injuries and illnesses sustained by the<br />

competitive athlete. Prerequisites: HSC 260 and 261.<br />

HSC 352. SUBSTANCE USE AND ABUSE<br />

Two hours credit<br />

A study in the basic principles of drug action, side effects, and toxic effects. Implications<br />

for the health education professional will be emphasized. Offered Fall Semester.<br />

HSC 353. SAFETY AND FIRST AID<br />

Two hours credit<br />

The nature and causes of accidents and safety measures for the prevention of common accidents<br />

in the home, school, industry, transportation, and recreation. Offered every semester.<br />

HSC 354. PERSONAL AND COMMUNITY HEALTH<br />

Three hours credit<br />

This course is related to the health of the whole community, such as sanitation of the<br />

water supply, occupational health hazards, food control, health agencies and their work, and<br />

a study of most major communicable and infectious diseases. Personal health includes the<br />

general study of the body organs, systems, functions, and mental health; however, it is primarily<br />

a study of those habits and practices which result in buoyant personal health. Offered<br />

every semester.<br />

HSC 357. HUMAN SEXUALITY<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A study of the sociological, psychological, biological, ethical, and legal components of<br />

human sexuality. Offered every semester.<br />

HSC 361. KINESIOLOGY<br />

Three hours credit<br />

Review of basic anatomy, primarily the muscular system; relationship of the fundamental<br />

laws of physics to human movement, and mechanical principles of skill instruction and<br />

analysis. Prerequisite: BIO 103 or HSC 292. Offered Fall Semester.<br />

HSC 365. CHILD HEALTH & SOCIAL BEHAVIOR<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A study of the physical and psychosocial growth and development of children; includes<br />

methods of organizing and implementing health measures, determining health status<br />

through screening processes; detection of remedial defects, referral procedures, and follow-up<br />

for correction; the promotion of physical, mental, social, and emotional health through environmental<br />

and special health services.<br />

HSC 390. SPECIAL TOPICS IN HEALTH SCIENCES<br />

One–four hours credit<br />

A course used to comply with requests for special topics and advanced studies in health<br />

science. Lecture and laboratory hours will vary with the courses taught. May be repeated for<br />

credit. Prerequisites specified in major. Offered on demand.<br />

HSC 391. PRINCIPLES OF PHARMACOLOGY<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A study of basic principles of drug action and the therapeutic application of the major<br />

pharmacological classification of drugs in the treatment of disease. Side effects, toxic effects<br />

and implications for the health professional are emphasized. Prerequisites: CHY 110, 113,<br />

119 or CHY 111, 112, HSC 292, 293. Offered Fall semester, even years.<br />

HSC 395. HEALTH PERSPECTIVES: CANCER AND AIDS<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A survey of the nature, causes, prevention, treatment, and future prospects of each disease.<br />

Although intended primarily for aspiring health professionals, it would be of benefit to<br />

everyone interested in learning more about these conditions and their impact on human<br />

society. Cancer will be the focus in even years and AIDS will be the focus in odd years.<br />

Prerequisites: BIO 103 (non–majors); BIO 251 or HSC 250, HSC 292, 293 (majors). Offered<br />

Fall Semester.
