FRE 491. STUDIES IN FRENCH LITERATURE: 19TH CENTURY Three hours credit<br />
A study of representative prose writers, such as Stendhal, Flaubert, Balzac, and Maupassant,<br />
as well as poets and playwrights, including Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Musset, and Hugo.<br />
Requirements include the research and writing of an analytical paper. Prerequisite: FRE 351<br />
or approval of instructor. Conducted in French.<br />
FRE 492. STUDIES IN FRENCH LITERATURE: 20TH CENTURY Three hours credit<br />
A study of selected French and francophone writers, such as Ionesco, Sartre, Camus,<br />
Césaire, Hébert and Oyono. Requirements include the research and writing of an analytical<br />
paper. Prerequisite: FRE 351 or approval of instructor. Conducted in French.<br />
FRE 493. SPECIAL TOPICS IN FRENCH<br />
Three hours credit<br />
A course offering a variety of topics and research concerns. The topic will change to meet<br />
student or current academic demand and interest. Course may be repeated once for credit,<br />
provided the topic is different than that taken the first time. Prerequisite: FRE 351 or<br />
approval of instructor. Conducted in French.<br />

GER 111. ELEMENTARY GERMAN I<br />
Three hours credit<br />
A proficiency-oriented course designed to provide a functional elementary foundation in<br />
the basic skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing in German along with an<br />
integrated study of German culture. No prerequisite. Elective credit only. No proficiency<br />
credit. One clock-hour lab required per week.<br />
GER 112. ELEMENTARY GERMAN II<br />
Three hours credit<br />
A continuation of the proficiency-oriented elementary course. Prerequisite: German 111<br />
or placement exam. Elective credit only. No proficiency credit. One clock-hour lab required<br />
per week.<br />
GER 211. INTERMEDIATE GERMAN I<br />
Three hours credit<br />
A proficiency-oriented course designed to review essential structures in further detail and<br />
to improve the student’s ability in speaking, listening, reading, and writing the German language.<br />
Prerequisite: GER 112 or placement. One clock-hour lab required per week. (Speakers<br />
who demonstrate near-native oral proficiency in the target language may not enroll in any<br />
course below the 300 level.)<br />
GER 212. INTERMEDIATE GERMAN II<br />
Three hours credit<br />
A continuation of the proficiency-oriented intermediate course. By the end of this course,<br />
the student should be prepared for more advanced study in the language and feel confident in<br />
being able to get along independently in a German-speaking country. Prerequisite: GER 211<br />
or placement. One clock-hour lab required per week. (Speakers who demonstrate near-native<br />
oral proficiency in the target language may not enroll in any course below the 300 level.)<br />

LIN 201. INTRODUCTION TO LANGUAGE AND CULTURE Three hours credit<br />
A course introducing students to the concept of the interaction of language and culture<br />
in a specific target language. The course will also provide a basic and limited oral<br />
introduction to the target language and its use in specific contexts. This course meets<br />
the language requirement for Bachelor of Science students only. (Bachelor of Science<br />
students with two years of high school foreign language or proficiency at the 112 level<br />
may take three hours of a foreign language at the intermediate level to fulfill the language<br />
requirement.) Course may be repeated once for elective credit, provided the topic<br />
is different than that taken the first time.
