SED 444. STUDENT TEACHING, GRADES 7-8<br />

Five hours credit<br />

Upon completion of all education courses, students will complete student teaching<br />

practicums for a total of 15 weeks in the public schools under the guidance of public school<br />

teachers and a university supervisor(s). The student will be assigned to at least two different<br />

classrooms, which may be at different schools. Students must enroll in two student teaching<br />

sessions and the appropriate seminar for a total of 12 hours. This will constitute the maximum<br />

load for the student teaching semester. No other classes may be taken during the student<br />

teaching semester. Students must make application the semester prior to the student<br />

teaching semester. Prerequisites: Completion of all education coursework, admission to the<br />

Teacher Education Program and to Student Teaching. Offered Fall and Spring Semesters.<br />

SED 445. STUDENT TEACHING, GRADES 9-12<br />

Special Education<br />

SPE 316. EXCEPTIONAL CHILD<br />

Three hours credit<br />

An introduction to special education including historical foundations, special education<br />

law, and current practices. The course will introduce all current information pertinent to<br />

those who will work with special needs students. Included will be issues and trends along<br />

with description of each handicapping condition. Techniques and procedures for working<br />

with the exceptional child using school and community resources will be emphasized. A<br />

service learning module is included.<br />

SPE 320. STUDENTS WITH MILD TO<br />

Four hours credit<br />

MODERATE EXCEPTIONALITIES<br />

An introduction to mild/moderate exceptionalities; an introduction to the literature, history,<br />

definitions, characteristics, identification procedures, and problems of the fields of<br />

learning disabilities, mild mental retardation, and behavior disorders. This course includes a<br />

field experience.<br />

SPE 321. NATURE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF STUDENTS Three hours credit<br />

WITH SEVERE DISABILITIES<br />

This course provides information on the nature and needs of individuals with severe/profound<br />

disabilities. It is a study of a broad group of developmental disabilities that have lifelong<br />

implications and that substantially limit many life functions. A directed observation in<br />

a school setting is required. Prerequisite: SPE 316.<br />

SPE 331. BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT<br />

Three hours credit<br />

Approaches to classroom management of students with disabilities and groups of children.<br />

Applied behavioral analysis is studied, including specific techniques such as task<br />

analysis, along with strategies for strengthening and reducing behaviors.<br />

SPE 335. EDUCATION OF GIFTED, TALENTED, AND CREATIVE Two hours credit<br />

Characteristics and special needs of the gifted individual. Definitions, identification procedures,<br />

and educational provisions are considered, along with career development.<br />

Emphasis is placed on structuring a supportive learning environment within the school setting<br />

as well as in the community.
