ENG 460. LINGUISTICS FOR TEACHING ENGLISH<br />

TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES<br />

A presentation of the linguistic, psycholinguistic, and sociocultural dimensions of second<br />

language teaching and learning. Prerequisites: ENG 360 and ENG 361. Offered Spring<br />

ENG462. METHODS OF TEACHING ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS Three hours credit<br />

OF OTHER LANGUAGES (TESOL)<br />

A comprehensive study of the knowledge and skills necessary for students to become<br />

effective teachers of English to speakers of other languages in grades Pre-K through 12.<br />

Course topics focus on classroom methods, approaches, and strategies to facilitate acquisition<br />

of English as a second language. The course includes a 30 clock-hour practicum.<br />

Prerequisite: English/Linguistics 460.<br />

ENG 471. INTRODUCTION TO SOUTHERN LITERATURE<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A chronological survey of Southern writers from John Smith to <strong>Lee</strong> Smith. This course<br />

examines Southern American fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama in its cultural context from<br />

colonial times to the present. Prerequisite: English 110. Offered Spring Semester, odd years.<br />

ENG 479. SENIOR HONORS STUDY<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A special advanced study course for seniors who meet the qualifications to graduate<br />

with honors. Courses approved for this listing may be graduate courses, or they may be specially<br />

designed by the department faculty. Prerequisite: Senior status and cumulative GPA<br />

3.4 or higher.<br />

ENG 481. HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE<br />

Three hours credit<br />

An introduction to the historical development of the English language from its Indo-<br />

European background through Old, Middle, and Modern English. Prerequisite: ENG 110.<br />

Offered Spring Semester, odd years.<br />

ENG 482. ADVANCED GRAMMAR<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A survey of modern theories of English grammar with time devoted to the study of traditional<br />

approaches. Prerequisite: ENG 110 and a minimum score of 70 on the departmental<br />

grammar exam.<br />

ENG 485. INTRODUCTION TO CHAUCER<br />

Three hours credit<br />

Reading of The Canterbury Tales in Middle English, with brief consideration of other<br />

works in the Chaucer canon and attention to medieval English language and custom.<br />

ENG 490. SPECIAL TOPICS IN ENGLISH<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A course presenting various topics and research concerns. The topic will change to meet<br />

student demand and interest. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor.<br />

ENG 495. ENGLISH IN CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE<br />

Three hours credit<br />

Through readings, oral discussion, a journal, and a paper, English majors are assisted in<br />

the integration of the various facets of the major in relation to fundamental disciplinary<br />

concepts and overarching philosophical, theological, and ethical concepts, guided by<br />

Christian perceptions of truth.<br />

ENG 499. RESEARCH SEMINAR<br />

Three hours credit<br />

Mastery of the techniques and procedures of research in language and literature and their<br />

application in a major research project. For upper-division English majors and minors only.
