MUS 242. SIGHTSINGING/EAR TRAINING III<br />

Further practice and training in application of aural skills; special emphasis is given to<br />

modulation, chromaticism, and syncopation. Prerequisite: MUS 144 or its equivalent.<br />

MUS 243. THEORY IV<br />

Three hours credit<br />

Continued study of the materials of music including an introduction to counterpoint,<br />

form and 20th-century techniques. Prerequisite: MUS 241 or its equivalent.<br />

MUS 244. SIGHTSINGING/EAR TRAINING IV<br />

One hour credit<br />

Further practice and training in application of aural skills. Prerequisite: MUS 242 or its<br />

equivalent.<br />

MUS 341. ORCHESTRATION AND ARRANGING<br />

Two hours credit<br />

An introduction to the instruments of the orchestra including range, technique, timbre,<br />

and transposition. Study of various principles of orchestrating for church instrumental<br />

ensembles.<br />

MUS 342. SEMINAR IN ADVANCED ORCHESTRATION II<br />

Two hours credit<br />

An in-depth study of orchestrating for strings and woodwinds. This course will focus on<br />

bowing techniques, alternate clefs, specific scoring problems for double reed instruments,<br />

review of ranges and transpositions, and special effects for string instrumentation.<br />

Prerequisite: MUS 341.<br />

MUS 343. SEMINAR IN ADVANCED ORCHESTRATION III<br />

Two hours credit<br />

An in-depth study of orchestrating for brass, percussion, and infrequently used instruments.<br />

This course will focus on brass techniques, alternate clefs, specific scoring problems<br />

for percussion instruments, review of ranges and transpositions, and special effects for percussion<br />

instruments. Prerequisite: MUS 342.<br />

MUS 344. SEMINAR IN ADVANCED ORCHESTRATION IV<br />

Two hours credit<br />

An advanced study of orchestration that will include preparation of major orchestration<br />

projects. Includes in-class presentations arranged by each student. Prerequisite: MUS 343.<br />

MUS 345. SEMINAR IN CHORAL ARRANGING<br />

Two hours credit<br />

An introduction to the aspects of choral arranging. The choral arranging will include<br />

two-, three- and four-part writing.
