One hour credit<br />

An intensive study of selected current topics in reading featuring a workshop conducted<br />

by experts in the field of reading.<br />

REA 495. SEMINAR IN READING RESEARCH<br />

Two hours credit<br />

An intensive study of selected topics, including research in the material of reading, and<br />

the writing of an analytical paper. Offered Spring Semester.<br />

SPA 111. ELEMENTARY SPANISH I<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A proficiency-oriented course designed to provide a functional elementary foundation in<br />

the basic skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Spanish along with an<br />

integrated study of Spanish culture. No prerequisite. Elective credit only. No proficiency<br />

credit. One clock-hour lab required per week. Offered Fall Semester.<br />

SPA 112. ELEMENTARY SPANISH II<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A continuation of the proficiency-oriented elementary course. Prerequisite: Spanish 111<br />

or placement exam. Elective credit only. No proficiency credit. One clock-hour lab required<br />

per week. Offered Spring Semester.<br />

SPA 211. INTERMEDIATE SPANISH I<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A proficiency-oriented course designed to review essential structures in further detail and<br />

to improve the student’s ability in speaking, listening, reading, and writing the Spanish language.<br />

Prerequisite: SPA 112 or placement exam. One clock-hour lab required per week.<br />

(Speakers who demonstrate near-native oral proficiency in the target language may not enroll<br />

in any course below the 300 level.) Offered Fall Semester.<br />

SPA 212. INTERMEDIATE SPANISH II<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A continuation of the proficiency-oriented intermediate course. By the end of this course,<br />

the student should be prepared for more advanced study in the language and feel confident in<br />

being able to get along independently in a Spanish-speaking country. Prerequisite: SPA 211 or<br />

placement. One clock-hour lab required per week. (Speakers who demonstrate near-native<br />

oral proficiency in the target language may not enroll in any course below the 300 level.)<br />

SPA 311. FOREIGN STUDIES IN SPANISH<br />

Three hours credit<br />

Offered within its cultural context, this course is a comprehensive history of Hispanic<br />

culture and its contributions to the world. Prerequisite: Spanish 212 or placement exam.<br />

SPA 312. FOREIGN STUDIES IN SPANISH<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A continuation of Spanish 311. Offered within its cultural context, this course is a comprehensive<br />

history of Hispanic culture and its contributions to the world. Prerequisite:<br />

Spanish 311.<br />

SPA 341. INTERMEDIATE SPANISH CONVERSATION<br />

Three hours credit<br />

AND COMPOSITION<br />

A course designed to improve oral and written proficiency in the Spanish language<br />

through appropriate conversational strategies based on authentic materials and an introduction<br />

to the writing process. Prerequisite: SPA 212 or placement. Offered Fall Semester.<br />

SPA 351. ASPECTS OF SPANISH LITERATURE<br />

Three hours credit<br />

Aspects of Spanish literature, including Spain and Latin America, in the various genres,<br />

according to the individual class. Materials will cover specific themes, distinctive periods,<br />

individuals or types of authors, and significant literary movements in the modern and/or contemporary<br />

literary forms. Prerequisite: SPA 341. Offered Spring Semester.
