MINORS<br />

The Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics offers minors<br />

in Biological Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Computer Science.<br />

Biological Science<br />

The Biological Science minors shall complete 18 hours in biology,<br />

with at least eight hours in courses numbered 300 and above.<br />

Chemistry<br />

The Chemistry minor shall complete 18 hours in chemistry, with at<br />

least eight hours in courses numbered 300 and above.<br />

Mathematics<br />

The Mathematics minor shall complete 18 hours in mathematics,<br />

including Mathematics 271 and 272 and at least six hours in courses<br />

numbered 300 and above.<br />

Computer Science<br />

The Computer Science minor shall complete 18 hours in computer<br />

science.<br />

Any minor should be approved by the department chair at some<br />

time before a student’s senior year.<br />

COURSE OFFERINGS<br />

Astronomy<br />

AST 111. PRINCIPLES OF ASTRONOMY<br />

Four hours credit<br />

A descriptive course designed to present the fundamental principles, as well as the historical<br />

underpinnings, of modern astronomy. A subtitle for the course could be “astronomy<br />

through space and time.” The course will treat foundations, the solar system, our sun and<br />

other stars, the milky way and other galaxies of the universe. Recent discoveries will be highlighted,<br />

and the subject will be presented descriptively from an experimental and observational<br />

perspective. Prerequisite: College Algebra or its equivalent. 150 minutes lecture and<br />

110 minutes lab per week.<br />

Biological Science<br />

BIO 103. HUMAN BIOLOGY<br />

Four hours credit<br />

A foundations course in biological science which focuses on the general concepts of life<br />

as demonstrated by the human body through its chemistry, organization, and continuity. A<br />

practical and relevant approach to understanding and maintenance is presented. 150 minutes<br />

lecture and 110 minutes of lab. Biology 111 or 112 recommended for students with strong<br />

biological science background. Non–science majors only. Offered every semester.<br />

BIO 104. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE<br />

Four hours credit<br />

A course that presents elementary concepts of scientific methodology and discusses<br />

issues relevant to understanding the natural environment and human activity. Scientific,<br />

political, and socioeconomic aspects of human activity related to the environment will be<br />

introduced and examined. This course will aim toward instilling an understanding of how<br />

and what scientifically-based points of view have contributed to the current climate of discussion<br />

regarding the environment. This course will emphasize the development of critical<br />

thinking as well as investigative and comprehension skills. 150 minutes lecture and 180<br />

minutes of laboratory/field experience. Offered every semester.
