SPE 345. SECONDARY STUDENTS WITH MILD<br />

Two hours credit<br />

TO MODERATE DISABILITIES<br />

Alternatives to segregated special education services and interface between regular and<br />

special education. Characteristics of the adolescent with mild/moderate disabilities and procedures<br />

for teaching academic, study and social skills in the resource room or inclusive classroom.<br />

School-to-work transition is studied, looking at career and vocational development of<br />

life skills.<br />

SPE 390. COLLABORATING WITH PARENTS, TEACHERS,<br />

Two hours credit<br />

AND OTHER PROFESSIONALS<br />

An introduction to the concept of collaboration as a means to meet the special needs of<br />

students. Issues such as due process, least restrictive environment, support services, organizations,<br />

advocacy groups, family dynamics, educational planning and delivery of services are<br />

emphasized.<br />

SPE 404. INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS FOR<br />

EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN<br />

Alternatives to segregated special education services and interface between regular and<br />

special education. Emphasis on materials and methods to meet the needs of exceptional<br />

learners. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education Program.<br />

SPE 405. INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS FOR STUDENTS<br />

Three hours credit<br />

WITH SEVERE DISABILITIES<br />

This course seeks to provide students with general instructional procedures for teaching<br />

individuals with severe disabilities. Information-gathering procedures along with formal and<br />

diagnostic assessment will be examined in order to determine the appropriate instructional<br />

curriculum for these individuals with the goal of implementing a functional curriculum that<br />

will enhance the quality of life. A laboratory experience is required. Prerequisites: SPE 316,<br />

SPE 321, SPE 331.<br />

SPE 417. POLICIES, PROCEDURES & PRACTICES<br />

Two hours credit<br />

Emphasizes the understanding of legislation, regulations and litigation related to the field<br />

of special education.<br />

SPE 424. DIAGNOSTIC PRESCRIPTIVE TEACHING<br />

Three hours credit<br />

Approaches involving identification and the use of diagnostic test materials to assess<br />

functional levels of ability of individuals with disabilities, followed by specific developmental<br />

or remedial recommendations consistent with ability level. Emphasis on matching deficit<br />

to appropriate program or technique which will yield optimum results.<br />

SPE 450/451. STUDENT TEACHING IN SPECIAL EDUCATION Ten hours credit<br />

Upon completion of all education courses, students will complete student teaching<br />

practicums for a total of 15 weeks in public schools and/or private facilities under the guidance<br />

of public school teachers/private practitioners, and a university supervisor(s). The student<br />

will be assigned to at least two different settings, which may be at different sites.<br />

Students must enroll in two student teaching sessions and the appropriate seminar for a total<br />

of 12 hours. This will constitute the maximum load for the student teaching semester. No<br />

other classes may be taken during the professional semester. Prerequisites: Completion of<br />

all education course work, admission to the Teacher Education Program and to Student<br />

Teaching. Students must make application the semester prior to the student teaching<br />

semester. Offered fall and spring semesters.
