An introduction to scientific language study including morphology, phonology, syntax,<br />

pragmatics, and the nature of language. Prerequisite: ENG 110.<br />

LIN 361. LANGUAGE ACQUISITION AND DEVELOPMENT Three hours credit<br />

An investigation of the cognitive processes of first and second language acquisition and<br />

development with special attention to the acquisition of literacy, language diversity, and<br />

bilingualism. Offered every semester.<br />

LIN 460. LINGUISTICS FOR TEACHING ENGLISH<br />

Three hours credit<br />

TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES<br />

A presentation of the linguistic, psycholinguistic, and sociocultural dimensions of second<br />

language teaching and learning. Prerequisites: LIN 360 and LIN 361. Offered Spring Semester.<br />

LIN 462. METHODS OF TEACHING ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS Three hours credit<br />

OF OTHER LANGUAGES (TESOL)<br />

A comprehensive study of the knowledge and skills necessary for students to become<br />

effective teachers of English to speakers of other languages in grades Pre-K through 12.<br />

Course topics focus on classroom methods, approaches, and strategies to facilitate acquisition<br />

of English as a second language. The course includes a 30 clock-hour practicum.<br />

Prerequisite: English/Linguistics 460.<br />

LIN 481. HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE<br />

Three hours credit<br />

An introduction to the historical development of the English language from its Indo-<br />

European background through Old, Middle, and Modern English. Prerequisite: ENG 110.<br />

Offered Spring Semester, odd years.<br />

LIN 482. ADVANCED GRAMMAR<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A survey of modern theories of English grammar with time devoted to the study of traditional<br />

approaches. Prerequisite: ENG 110 and a minimum score of 70 on the departmental<br />

grammar exam.<br />

LIN 495. FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND FAITH:<br />

A CAPSTONE COURSE FOR MAJORS<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A capstone seminar focusing on the Christian foreign language major’s perception of<br />

God’s creative purpose in second-language learning and instruction, linguistics and cultural<br />

expression, and methodologies of integration. This course affords students, as<br />

Christian professionals, the opportunity to develop and articulate appropriate responses<br />

to questions arising from the interaction of their discipline and faith. Required of all foreign<br />

language majors.<br />

REA 101. COLLEGE READING<br />

Two hours credit<br />

A course designed to improve comprehension and reading rate and to enhance vocabulary<br />

and study skills. Individualized instruction is provided with computer programs.<br />

REA 361. LANGUAGE ACQUISITION AND DEVELOPMENT Three hours credit<br />

REA 371. SURVEY OF READING<br />

Three hours credit<br />

A study of the reading process and the history and philosophy of the various models of<br />

reading instruction.<br />

REA 450. ASSESSMENT OF READING PERFORMANCE<br />

Three hours credit<br />

An introduction to formal and informal procedures and instruments used in assessment<br />

of reading, including a practicum in diagnosis of reading difficulties.
