Two hours credit<br />
An introductory survey of the principal Western forms and styles from antiquity to the<br />
present. Extensive use of recordings supplemented by live performances.<br />
MUS 390. SPECIAL TOPICS IN MUSIC<br />
One-three hours credit<br />
A course presenting various topics and research concerns. The topic will change to meet<br />
student demand and interest. Prerequisite: Permission from the instructor.<br />
MUS 499. SENIOR SEMINAR IN MUSIC<br />
Three hours credit<br />
A survey of the various academic disciplines of musical study, their basic assumptions<br />
and the relationship of those premises to Christian principles. Emphasis is placed in developing<br />
personal integration of the study and practice of music with Christian faith.<br />
Prerequisites: MUS 243, MUS 244, THE 331, MUS 333 or 334, MUS 331 or 332<br />

MUS 290. INTRODUCTION TO INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC<br />
Two hours credit<br />
An introductory survey of orchestral instruments focusing on developing a functional<br />
knowledge of wind, string, fretted, and percussion instruments. Basic skills are emphasized<br />
through hands-on instruction.<br />
MUS 291. BRASS TECHNIQUES<br />
Two hours credit<br />
A course designed to prepare students for teaching the brass/wind instruments at the<br />
beginner to intermediate levels. Performance on the instruments is included. Offered Spring<br />
Semester, odd years.<br />
MUS 292. WOODWIND TECHNIQUES<br />
Two hours credit<br />
A course designed to prepare students for teaching the woodwind instruments at the<br />
beginner to intermediate levels. Performance on the instruments is included. Offered Fall Semester,<br />

MUS 293. STRING TECHNIQUES<br />
Two hours credit<br />
A course designed to prepare students for teaching string instruments at the beginner to<br />
intermediate levels. Performance on the instruments is included. Offered Spring Semester,<br />

A course designed to prepare students for teaching percussion instruments at the beginner<br />

MUS 330. FUNDAMENTALS OF CONDUCTING<br />

Basic techniques of conducting simple and complex beat patterns, use of the left hand for<br />
cuing and introductory baton techniques. Offered Fall Semester.<br />

A continuation of Fundamentals of Conducting. Prerequisite: MUS 330. Offered Spring<br />

MUS 333. HISTORY OF WESTERN MUSIC<br />

A study of the history of music and musical style in their social, political and historical<br />
contexts from antiquity to c. 1750. Extensive score study and listening are involved.<br />
Prerequisite: MUS 241 and 242. Offered Fall Semester.<br />
MUS 334. HISTORY OF WESTERN MUSIC<br />
Three hours credit<br />
A study of the history of music and musical style from c. 1725 to c. 1990. Offered Spring<br />
