ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Performance Theory first appeared in 1977, as Essays on Performance Theory 1970–1976 published by Drama Book Specialists of New York. For the 1988 revised edition certain changes were made – see “Author’s Note.” The publication history of individual essays is as follows: “Approaches” appeared as “Approaches to Theory/Criticism” in the TDR, The Drama Review 10 (4) (1966). “Actuals: A Look into Performance Theory” (here “Actuals”) was written for The Rarer Action: Essays in Honor of Francis Fergusson, edited by Alan Cheuse and Richard Koffler, New Brunswick, Rutgers University Press, 1970. “Drama, Script, Theater, and Performance” appeared in TDR, The Drama Review 17 (3) (1973). “From Ritual to Theater and Back” was delivered as a paper to the Rassegna Internazionale de Teatri Stabili in Florence, Italy, 1974; it was revised and printed in the Educational Theater Journal 26 (4) (1974). “Toward a Poetics of Performance” was delivered as a paper at the Ethnopoetics Symposium, sponsored by the Center for Twentieth Century Studies of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1975; it was revised for this book. “Selective Inattention” appeared in Performing Arts Journal 1 (1) (1976) but was written for the first edition of this book. “Ethology and Theater” was also written for this book. The first version of “Magnitudes of Performance” was written for the 1982 World Conference on Ritual and Theater, sponsored principally by the Wenner-Gren
