Sprinkler systems are automatic fire extinguishing systems. They are designed todetect the outbreak of fire at an early stage and extinguish it as quickly as possible. Onceactivated for the purpose of extinguishing fire, such systems usually run for at least30 minutes.The BD2A/BD2C, LDA/LDC and LXA/LXC busbar trunking systems underwent sprinklertesting. In the absence of a binding standard, the tests were carried out based on a teststructure reflecting practical application (see diagram).Test resultsBD2A/BD2C and LXA/LXCAll mounting positions of the BD2A/BD2C and LXA/LXC busbar trunking systems weretested for water resistance in IP54 degree of protection on the basis of the national riskprevention guidelines for sprinkler systems issued in Germany. Insulation resistancemeasurements were taken before and after the 90-minute sprinkling period and a highvoltagetest was carried out in accordance with EN 60439-2. The equipment passed the test,proving that the busbar system can be put back into operation immediately and without delayonce the sprinkler system has run its course.LDA/LDCThe LD busbar system with IP34 degree of protection and the associated tap-off units withIP54 protection were sprinkled with both horizontal and vertical trunking runs with a 3/4"umbrella sprinkler and a 1/2" flat spray sprinkler at a water pressure of 6 bar. In order to beable to assess electrical performance during testing, insulation resistance measurementswere taken during the course of the test. No operational failures occurred.Even when subject to extreme water loads such as those associated with sprinkler systems,the LDA/LDC busbar system is able to remain in full working order.
