But although these fissures at firstsight seem the result of erosion, it is difficult to underst<strong>and</strong> how it is that theyoccur generally in the hardest rocks, <strong>and</strong> are spread with remarkable uniformityfor hundreds of miles over fiords <strong>and</strong> highl<strong>and</strong>s.
