THE TIiNINSULA OP JYLLAND. 49Kattegat <strong>and</strong> North Sea, have their water-parting much nearer to the geometricalaxis of the peninsula than those of Schleswig.But the two sides differ greatly intheir aspect, presenting the same contrasts as in the German territory.<strong>The</strong> westernsection is uniform, <strong>and</strong> slopes gently, while the eastern is more abrupt, more varied,<strong>and</strong> more irregular.<strong>The</strong> hills of Jyll<strong>and</strong> facing the Kattegat belong mostly to the drift, <strong>and</strong> arelargely composed of s<strong>and</strong>s, clays, <strong>and</strong> marls, forming the detritus of granite, gneiss,<strong>and</strong> chalk.<strong>The</strong> older strata are here <strong>and</strong> there strewn with boulders <strong>and</strong> gravelsof glacial origin. <strong>The</strong> hills are not continued in regular ridges along the coast,but rise in isolated masses, sometimes to the height of over 300 feet. <strong>The</strong> Skammlingsbank,just north of the German frontier, attains an elevation of 400 feet abovethe Little Belt ; other summ<strong>its</strong> occur between the Vejle <strong>and</strong> Horsens fiords, <strong>and</strong>south of the town of Aarhus. This hilly eastern tract is very fertile, <strong>and</strong> theheights are covered with magnificent beech forests sometimes down to the seaside.
