G2SCANDINAVIA.A little to the north-west is the old royal castle of Jelling, where are to be seen thetumuli raised about 960 to Gorm <strong>and</strong> Thyra by their son Harald " of the BlueTooth."Like Vejle, Horsens st<strong>and</strong>s at the head of a fiord, whereas Aarhus, thelargest town in Jyll<strong>and</strong>, is built on the coast, <strong>and</strong> has a well-sheltered harbour.It is the central station of the Jyll<strong>and</strong> railway system, <strong>and</strong> the chief point of communicationwith Copenhagen. Formerly the political centre was Viborg, whichst<strong>and</strong>s on the shores of a lake in the heart of the peninsula.It was the principalresidence of the old Danish kings, <strong>and</strong> <strong>its</strong> cathedral, recently rebuilt, is one of thefinest churches in Denmark. East of it lies S<strong>and</strong>ers, communicating directlywith the sea by a winding fiord, though large vessels get no farther than the deepanchorage of Udbyhoi, near <strong>its</strong> mouth.B<strong>and</strong>ers is a chief centre of the manufactureof the so-called " Swedish gloves."Aalborg, stretching along the south bank of the Lim -fiord, here crossed by afine railway bridge, has a brisk trade, though the bar gives access to small craftonly. Yet a large seaport <strong>and</strong> harbour of refuge are much needed at this placebetween the two stormy channels of the Kattegat <strong>and</strong> Skager Rak. Here areyearly wrecked some thirty or forty of the forty or fifty thous<strong>and</strong> vessels passingthrough the stra<strong>its</strong>, <strong>and</strong> in November, 1876, thirty-nine foundered at Vejle.port of Ffederikshavn, south of the Skaw, is quite inadequate as a harbour ofrefuge, <strong>and</strong> the idea has been entertained of enlarging it by enclosing theneighbouring islets of Hirtsholmene. <strong>The</strong> town of Sltagen, at the Skaw, isthe most important Danish fishing station. Here vast quantities of whiting,cod, turbot, soles, <strong>and</strong> other fish are taken <strong>and</strong> shipped for Copenhagen <strong>and</strong> otherplaces.On the isl<strong>and</strong> of Fyen st<strong>and</strong>s Odense, the " Town of Odin," one of the oldestplaces in Denmark. <strong>The</strong> cathedral contains some royal tombs, <strong>and</strong> it is thebirthplace of the delightful writer of children's tales, Andersen. Although atsome distance from the sea, it is the centre of a considerable trade, promoted bythe line of railway crossing the isl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> placing it in direct comrminication withMiddel/art <strong>and</strong> Strib, on the Little Belt, <strong>and</strong> the fortified port of Ni/borg, on theGreat Belt. On the south coast of Fyen, <strong>and</strong> facing the islet of Taasinge, isSrendborg, an important commercial centre for the neighbouring isl<strong>and</strong>s of Taasinge,^Ero, <strong>and</strong> Langel<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> surrounded by some of the loveliest scenery in Denmark.<strong>The</strong><strong>The</strong> brothers Oersted were natives of Langel<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> the great philologistBask was the son of a Fyen peasant.Copenhagen.—Copenhagen (Ejobenhavn), capital of Sjiill<strong>and</strong>, contains of <strong>its</strong>elfalone about one-eighth of the entire population of the kingdom, <strong>and</strong> more than thatof all the other Danish towns together. It is, moreover, something more thanthe capital of a decayed state, still maintaining a special position as a Europeancity, the common property of all the northern nations.Its geographical position, like that of Constantinople, presents a double advantageas the intersecting point of two great highways, the water route from sea to
