But it has latterly been extensively planted, <strong>and</strong> theRytterknegten, or culminating point, 512 feet high, is now surrounded bywoodl<strong>and</strong>s. At the northern extremity of the isl<strong>and</strong> Cape Hammeren is almostFi^' 25. Helligdommex Bocks, Noktii Coast, Borxuolm.entirely detached from the l<strong>and</strong> by an isthmus, on which is a deep lake that thepeople of Allinge proposed to convert into a harbour of refuge. But the projectwas ab<strong>and</strong>oned in consequence of the formidable obstacle presented by the graniteshores of the lake. Just south of this spot are the vast ruins of Hammershuus,the former residence of the governors, <strong>and</strong> on the headl<strong>and</strong> <strong>its</strong>elf there now st<strong>and</strong>sone of the most important lighthouses in the Baltic.
