50 SrAXMXAYlA.Of all the Baltic islands Bornholm presents the most geometrical outlines,consisting of a parallelogram 15 miles by 12, and sloping gently northwards. Thegranitic plateau is covered with a thin layer of humus, where nothing formerlygrew except heather. But it has latterly been extensively planted, and theRytterknegten, or culminating point, 512 feet high, is now surrounded bywoodlands. At the northern extremity of the island Cape Hammeren is almostFi^' 25. Helligdommex Bocks, Noktii Coast, Borxuolm.entirely detached from the land by an isthmus, on which is a deep lake that thepeople of Allinge proposed to convert into a harbour of refuge. But the projectwas abandoned in consequence of the formidable obstacle presented by the graniteshores of the lake. Just south of this spot are the vast ruins of Hammershuus,the former residence of the governors, and on the headland itself there now standsone of the most important lighthouses in the Baltic.
