The change of use of landor buildings, from one class to another, normally requires planning permission. The changeof use of land or buildings within a particular Class does not involve development requiringplanning permission.Class B1:Business Use including offices (other than those falling in Class A2 Financial andProfessional services), research and development and industrial processes, providing the usecan be carried out in any residential area without detriment to amenity by reason of noise,vibration, smell, fumes, smoke, soot, ash, dust or grit.Class B2:General IndustrialClass B8:Storage or Distribution warehouses including wholesale cash and carry.Wildlife SitesCumbria Wildlife Trust designates some sites, which do not meet the criteria set out byEnglish Nature for SSSI’s, as Wildlife Sites. They contain examples of important habitats withuncommon species of plants and animals.Windfall SiteAn informal term used to describe a site where planning consent (usually for housing) isgranted despite that site not being allocated for development in the <strong>Local</strong> <strong>Plan</strong>.World Heritage SitesThe World Heritage Convention from which World Heritage Sites derive was ratified by theUK in 1984. The Convention provides for the identification, protection, conservation andpresentation of cultural and natural sites of outstanding universal value.
