LIST OF REPOSITORIES CONSULTED AND OUTCOMES<br />

THE AMERICAN ANTIQUARIAN MUSEUM<br />

The archive here (Worcester, MA) was consulted in <strong>the</strong> hope <strong>of</strong> finding material relating to Norcross<br />

Bro<strong>the</strong>rs, whose headquarters were in <strong>the</strong> same city. The archive does not contain any Norcross Bro<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

material.<br />

THE ARCHIVES OF AMERICAN ART<br />

H. Siddons Mowbray executed <strong>the</strong> ceiling <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Living Room. The paintings were removed in 1906. The<br />

H. Siddons Mowbray Papers contain correspondence on micr<strong>of</strong>ilm with several letters on <strong>the</strong> design and<br />

execution <strong>of</strong> this work.<br />

AVERY ARCHITECTURAL LIBRARY, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY<br />

The Stanford White Collection is comprised <strong>of</strong> letterpress books <strong>of</strong> out-going correspondence and boxes <strong>of</strong><br />

in-coming correspondence contain bills and correspondence relating to purchases for Hyde <strong>Park</strong>. There is<br />

also correspondence with Edward Simmons concerning <strong>the</strong> decoration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dining Room and Reception<br />

Room. The Ogden Codman Collection contains <strong>the</strong> preliminary drawings, sketches and plans for Mrs.<br />

Vanderbilt's Bedroom and Boudoir, as well as for individual pieces <strong>of</strong> furniture designed for those rooms.<br />

The Warren & Wetmore Collection is <strong>the</strong> major repository <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> firm; nothing relates to Hyde <strong>Park</strong>. All<br />

unidentified drawings were examined. The library also houses an extensive collection <strong>of</strong> period engineering<br />

and architectural journals.<br />

BILTMORE<br />

The collection remained uncatalogued at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> this project.<br />

CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES<br />

The library's storage facility houses an outstanding collection <strong>of</strong> period engineering and architectural<br />

journals.<br />

COOPER-HEWITT NATIONAL DESIGN MUSEUM LIBRARY<br />

The E.F. Caldwell collection is an enormous archive that documents in photographs <strong>the</strong> lighting fixtures at<br />

Hyde <strong>Park</strong>. The photographs are bound in oversized albums and organized by type <strong>of</strong> fixture. The<br />

<strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Wallcoverings was culled for more information about <strong>the</strong> wallpapers used in <strong>the</strong> second<br />

floor guest rooms <strong>of</strong> Hyde <strong>Park</strong>. There was no additional information obtained; none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hyde <strong>Park</strong><br />

papers matched those in <strong>the</strong> collection.<br />

A.L. DIAMENT<br />

Vanderbilt purchased reproduction papers for <strong>the</strong> second floor guest rooms in 1932 and <strong>the</strong>y were ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

purchased through or shipped by A.L. Diament. Correspondence with Debbie Diament, who holds <strong>the</strong><br />

papers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> firm, yielded no new information.<br />

FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT LIBRARY<br />

The collections contain some correspondence relating to <strong>the</strong> transfer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> property to <strong>the</strong> NPS.<br />

THE GETTY MUSEUM<br />

The Duveen Archive, transferred from <strong>the</strong> Metropolitan Museum <strong>of</strong> Art, contains correspondence<br />

between Duveen and Frederick Vanderbilt in <strong>the</strong> years 1916-1918 and 1919-1921. The archive was<br />

inaccessible both at <strong>the</strong> Metropolitan Museum and <strong>the</strong> Getty Museum because <strong>of</strong> its fragile condition. It<br />

is in <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> being humidified.<br />

HAGLEY MUSEUM AND LIBRARY<br />

The Hagley Museum and Library has a wonderful collection <strong>of</strong> trade catalogs. These are cataloged by<br />

type (i.e. plumbing, heating).<br />
