HYDE PARK HISTORICAL SOCIETY<br />

The collection focuses on <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> village and contains only one oral history interview used in<br />

this study.<br />

There is no material in <strong>the</strong> collection relating to this study.<br />

THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS<br />

The Charles F. McKim Collection includes <strong>the</strong> correspondence <strong>of</strong> Charles McKim and contains letters to<br />

Frederick Vanderbilt and o<strong>the</strong>rs with references to Hyde <strong>Park</strong>. The collection is available on micr<strong>of</strong>ilm.<br />

The Samuel Gottscho archive contains interior views <strong>of</strong> Wakehurst, Daisy Van Alen's house in Newport.<br />

These are available over <strong>the</strong> internet.<br />

THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART<br />

The Ogden Codman Collection, Division <strong>of</strong> Prints and Drawings, includes <strong>the</strong> watercolor elevations <strong>of</strong><br />

Mrs. Vanderbilt's Bedroom and Boudoir, and also elevations <strong>of</strong> 1025 Fifth Avenue. The Bedroom and<br />

Boudoir elevations are highly finished presentation drawings which Codman only executed in <strong>the</strong> early<br />

part <strong>of</strong> his career.<br />

MILLS MANSION STATE HISTORIC SITE<br />

The library collection is an excellent source <strong>of</strong> period proscriptive literature on topics related to <strong>the</strong><br />

Gilded Age. There is no material in <strong>the</strong> collection which relates specifically to Hyde <strong>Park</strong>. The<br />

architecture and interiors <strong>of</strong> Mills Mansion were also examined. The mansion's archive contains good<br />

information on <strong>the</strong> house's mechanical systems, used as a comparison to Hyde <strong>Park</strong>.<br />

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN HISTORY, SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION<br />

The Archives at <strong>the</strong> <strong>National</strong> Museum <strong>of</strong> American History contains hundreds <strong>of</strong> thousands <strong>of</strong> trade<br />

catalogs. Many are included on <strong>the</strong>ir online catalog, but <strong>the</strong> vast majority is in <strong>the</strong> mezzanine, stored<br />

alphabetically by company name.<br />

NEWPORT HISTORICAL SOCIETY<br />

There is no material in <strong>the</strong> collection which specifically relates to Frederick Vanderbilt's life in Newport;<br />

however, a surviving room-by-room inventory <strong>of</strong> "Chetwode," built for <strong>the</strong> Wells family by Trumbauer in<br />

1902, includes <strong>the</strong> service areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> house. The material carried a research restriction at <strong>the</strong> time<br />

researched.<br />

THE NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY<br />

The McKim, Mead & White Collection is <strong>the</strong> largest repository <strong>of</strong> material pertaining to <strong>the</strong> firm and was<br />

donated in two separate groups in 1950 and 1968. There are drawings, billbooks, photographs, and glass<br />

plate negatives <strong>of</strong> Hyde <strong>Park</strong>. The drawings encompass <strong>the</strong> designs for <strong>the</strong> original proposed renovation<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Langdon Mansion, <strong>the</strong> designs for <strong>the</strong> Pavilion, Mansion, gate houses, <strong>the</strong> Wales House, and <strong>the</strong><br />

Howard House. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m are <strong>the</strong> original ink on linen drawings. The correspondence and<br />

specifications for this commission do not survive. There is no information pertaining to Hyde <strong>Park</strong> in <strong>the</strong><br />

books <strong>of</strong> clippings and internal journals which were also examined.<br />

THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY<br />

The Margaret McKim Maloney Collection in <strong>the</strong> Manuscript Division contains one letter from Frederick<br />

Vanderbilt to Charles McKim. Margaret McKim Maloney was Charles Follen McKim's only child. The<br />

Richard Butler Papers contain numerous references to Georges Glaenzer. Butler was Georges Glaenzer's<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r-in-law and Frederic Bartholdi's representative in <strong>the</strong> U.S. for <strong>the</strong> Statue <strong>of</strong> Liberty. Glaenzer<br />

translated letters for Butler and seems to have been a personal friend <strong>of</strong> Bartholdi's. Glaenzer was also<br />

responsible for <strong>the</strong> draping <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> base <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Statue <strong>of</strong> Liberty when it was formally presented. The E.F.<br />

Caldwell Papers contain <strong>the</strong> business records <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lighting firm that supplied many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fixtures for<br />

Hyde <strong>Park</strong>. There are numbers identifying commissions. Unfortunately, <strong>the</strong> first volume with <strong>the</strong><br />
