NKEA: Communications Content and Infrastructure Minister’s Message<br />

As the Minister responsible for the Communications Content and<br />

Infrastructure NKEA, I am pleased to share with you some of the key<br />

milestones that we have achieved after one year of its implementation.<br />

In communications content, more than 30,000 hours of national archives,<br />

films, documentaries, visual and audio content have been digitised to<br />

promote and commercialise Malaysia’s cultural richness, a departure from<br />

past practices of just archiving. In addition, more than RM300 million worth<br />

of content and intellectual property rights have been exported globally by<br />

the industry through Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), Astro, Media Prima,<br />

Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and Film Development<br />

Corporation Malaysia (Perbadanan Kemajuan Filem Nasional Malaysia –<br />

FINAS) during the first half of the year.<br />

To continuously expand the infrastructure and reduce the digital divide,<br />

more than 1,500 Kampung Tanpa Wayar and Community Broadband Centres<br />

(CBCs) are operational nationwide, benefiting more than one million people<br />

in the rural areas. As for the urban community, two initiatives i.e. Connected@<br />

KL (Kuala Lumpur) and Connected@KK (Kota Kinabalu) were launched to<br />

promote broadband proliferation at business premises and residential areas.<br />

To make our bandwidth price more competitive, a network consortium<br />

named Konsortium Rangkaian Serantau Sdn Bhd has been established<br />

comprising 24 companies licensed in network facilities provision and<br />

network service provision by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia<br />

Commission (MCMC). The consortium will begin to consolidate its aggregate<br />

bandwidth purchase to leverage on the economies of scale while examining<br />

the viability of venturing into development of additional cable systems<br />

for Malaysia. All the initiatives mentioned will further assist in achieving<br />

the broadband penetration target of 75 per cent by 2015. Currently, the<br />

broadband penetration is 62 per cent.<br />

I am also pleased to announce that more than 100 Small and Medium<br />

Enterprises (SMEs) have benefited directly and indirectly through some<br />

of the projects implemented under the Communications Content and<br />

Infrastructure NKEA. The journey has just begun. The Communications<br />

Content and Infrastructure NKEA will continue its efforts under the <strong>ETP</strong><br />

towards a highly connected and culture-rich society.<br />
