Sympathetic trunkComment: The superior salivatory nucleus (via CN VII) innervatesthe submandibular ganglion, which supplies the submandibular andsublingual salivary glands. The inferior salivatory nucleus (via CNIX) innervates the otic ganglion, which supplies the parotid salivarygland. These parasympathetic nerve fibers stimulate secretion. Thesympathetic postganglionic noradrenergic fibers from the superiorcervical ganglion activate contraction of the myoepithelial cells of thesalivary ducts. Salivation is important as an initial phase of digestion,preparing food for swallowing. Salivation also aids in speaking. Salivacontains biological mediators and immunoglobulins that providebarrier protection against potentially dangerous organisms that maygain access through the oral cavity.Regional Neuroscience See book 9.47
