Ventral anterior (VA) thalamic nucleusComment: The basal ganglia consist of the striatum (caudatenucleus, putamen) and globus pallidus. The substantia nigra (SN) andsubthalamic nucleus (STN), which are reciprocally connected with thebasal ganglia, often are included as part of this system. Inputs to thebasal ganglia derive from the cerebral cortex, thalamus (intralaminarnuclei), SN pars compacta (dopamine input), subthalamic nucleus,and rostral raphe nuclei (serotonergic input). Inputs from the STNreciprocally interconnect with the globus pallidus (GP). The internalsegment of the GP projects to the thalamus (VL, VA, intralaminarnuclei), providing input to the cells of origin for the corticospinalsystem and other motor cortical output (to other brain stem UMNsystems and to the basal ganglia). This allows the basal gangliato assist the cortex in selecting wanted patterns of activity andsuppressing unwanted patterns of activity. Damage to basal gangliacomponents often results in movement disorders. Damage to thedopamine neurons in SN pars compacta results in Parkinson’sdisease, characterized by resting tremor, muscular rigidity,bradykinesia, and postural instability.Systemic Neuroscience See book 15.23
