Pharyngeal, tonsillar, andlingual branches of CN IXComment: CN IX has sensory, motor, and autonomic components.Motor fibers from nucleus ambiguus supply the stylopharyngeusmuscle and may assist in innervation of pharyngeal muscles forswallowing. Preganglionic parasympathetic axons from the inferiorsalivatory nucleus travel with CN IX to the otic ganglion, whichsupplies the parotid salivary gland. Special sensory axons fromthe petrosal (inferior) ganglion of IX carry information from tastebuds on the posterior one third of the tongue and part of the softpalate and terminate in the rostral portion of nucleus solitarius.Additional primary sensory axons in the inferior ganglion of IXconvey general sensation from the posterior third of the tongueand from the pharynx, fauces, tonsils, tympanic cavity, eustachiantube, and mastoid cells; the central portion of the axon terminatesin the descending nucleus of V. General sensory fibers provide theafferent limb of the gag reflex. Additional primary sensory neuronsinnervate the carotid body (CO, chemoreception) and carotid sinus(baroceptors) and convey this information to the caudal nucleussolitarius. Primary sensory axons from the superior ganglion of IXinnervate a small region behind the ear and convey general sensationinto the descending nucleus of V. The glossopharyngeal nerve canbe subject to brief, excruciating paroxysms of pain (glossopharyngealneuralgia), similar to trigeminal neuralgia.Regional Neuroscience See book 11.26
