Nucleus accumbens17. Septal nucleiComment: Pyramidal neurons in the subiculum and hippocampalregions CA1 and CA3 give rise to the efferent fornix. The subiculumprojects to hypothalamic nuclei (especially mammillary nuclei)and thalamic nuclei via the postcommissural fornix. CA1 and CA3neurons send axons to the septal nuclei, nucleus accumbens, thepreoptic and anterior hypothalamic areas, the cingulate cortex, andassociation areas of the frontal lobe. Afferent cholinergic axonsfrom septal nuclei traverse the fornix to supply the dentate gyrusand hippocampal CA regions; loss of this input may be associatedwith short-term memory dysfunction. Extensive inputs arrive in thehippocampal formation from sensory association cortices, prefrontalcortex, insular cortex, amygdaloid nuclei, and the olfactory bulb viathe entorhinal cortex. The entorhinal cortex is fully integrated into theinternal circuitry of the hippocampal formation. It is also reciprocallyconnected with the amygdala.Systemic Neuroscience See book 16.28
