Cingulate cortexComment: The corpus callosum is the principal commissural(interhemispheric) pathway in the brain, connecting cortical regionson one side with their counterpart on the other side. The anteriorcommissure subserves this role for interconnections betweenportions of the temporal lobes. On some occasions, the corpuscallosum (and anterior commissure) is surgically sectioned to preventthe spread of seizure activity from one side to the other; this iscalled a “split brain” preparation. When isolated by sectioning ofthe commissural pathways, each hemisphere is independent andis not aware of specific activity undertaken by the other side. Thus,the left hemisphere can identify visual stimuli presented in the rightvisual world, but not visual stimuli presented in the left visual world(processed by the right hemisphere). Similarly, the left hemispheredoes not know where the left hand and arm are located if they arekept from the view of the left hemisphere; the left hand may actindependently of the conscious intent of the left hemisphere. Someemotion content from the hemispheres may transfer to the other sidethrough brain stem regions, providing a limbic context that may beperceived to some extent by both hemispheres.Regional Neuroscience See book 13.14A
