MedullaComment: Several regions of the ventricular system are visiblein coronal sections at this level. The body of the lateral ventricleand its transition to the trigone area and inferior horn are evidentat this posterior region. The superior portion of the third ventricleis present medial to the columns of the fornix. The fourth ventricleand its surrounding brain structures are particularly visible in thepontine region, but the interconnecting aqueduct is present onlyin a more anterior coronal section. Also present superior to thesuperior colliculi, in more posterior coronal sections, is the cistern ofthe great cerebral vein, an extraventricular region of subarachnoidspace. The cerebrospinal fluid system provides internal and externalprotection and buoyancy, preventing damage to delicate long tractsand neuronal tissue from abrupt head movements or potential rapidshearing forces.Regional Neuroscience See book 13.19B
