Corpus callosumComment: Long cortical association pathways link regions ofthe cerebral cortex on one side with nonadjacent areas of thesame hemisphere. Some pathways link multiple sensory corticeswith association areas for multimodal processing and integratedinterpretation of the outside world. Some association pathwaysconnect language areas of the dominant hemisphere with eachother. Broca’s area of the frontal cortex and Wernicke’s area in theparietotemporal region are interconnected by long association fibersof the arcuate fasciculus and superior longitudinal fasciculus. Whenthese pathways are disrupted, Broca’s area and Wernicke’s areaare dissociated; the patient does not exhibit classical expressiveor receptive aphasia but demonstrates the inability to repeatcomplex words or sentences, a disorder called conductive aphasia.The cingulum is a site of multiple intercortical connections, aswell as ascending and descending projection axons such as themonoaminergic axonal systems (catecholamine and serotonin);damage to these pathways can result in depression and bipolardisorder, as well as attention deficits. Bilateral damage to associationpathways from the frontal lobe may result in euphoria andinappropriate affect.Regional Neuroscience See book 13.26
