Nasociliary nerveComment: CN II is a central tract carrying visual informationto further central sites from the ipsilateral retina. CNs III (motorcomponent), IV, and VI are lower motor neurons that innervateextraocular muscles. Sensory fibers of CN V1 supply generalsensation to the cornea and eyeball and provide the afferent limbof the corneal reflex. Motor fibers of CN VII innervate the orbicularisoculi muscles, closing the eye; these fibers provide the efferentlimb of the corneal reflex. CN II may be damaged by a centraldemyelinating disease (multiple sclerosis), an optic nerve glioma,ischemia (central retinal artery), or injury (sphenoid fracture). Theresultant deficit is ipsilateral blindness or a scotoma (blind spot)corresponding to the site of the damaged fibers; the ipsilateral natureof the deficit rules out optic chiasm or optic tract involvement. Theretina is CNS tissue and may undergo macular degeneration, leadingto an inability to read and loss of acuity. The retina also may beaffected by increased intracranial pressure conveyed through theCSF in the subarachnoid space surrounding the optic nerve.Regional Neuroscience See book 11.18
