This nucleus innervates the levator palpebrae superiorismuscle; damage results in profound ptosis of the ipsilateral eye.A lesion of CN III damages preganglionic parasympathetic outflowfrom the nucleus of Edinger-Westphal, resulting in a fixed, dilatedipsilateral pupil. CN IV innervates the superior oblique muscle;damage results in an inability to look downward when lookingnasally. The patient has difficulty walking down stairs or off curbsand diplopia when trying to read laying down; compensates byavoiding use of the denervated superior oblique and turns headaway from the side of the lesion. CN VI innervates the lateral rectusmuscle; damage results in medial strabismus, inability to move theipsilateral eye laterally, and diplopia on attempted lateral gaze. Theciliary ganglion gives rise to postganglionic parasympathetic axonsthat supply the pupillary constrictor muscle and the ciliary muscle;damage results in a fixed, dilated pupil that does not constrict for thepupillary light reflex and does not accommodate to near vision.Regional Neuroscience See book 11.20
